What a good question gordie and i am only going to guess at the answer based on my experiences.

If the heart and blood vessels (coronary) are healthy, then immersion in cold water will not harm the person involved. Remember that in WW2 torpedoed merchant navy seamen could survive for 30 mins in the ice cold water s of the North Atlantic.

However, the effect of throwing ice cold water over a person with impaired or "second hand " coronary artery circulation could well be fatal..
You can rest assured there will be a fatality before long, and the "anti-" hysteria will then become as frantic in cyberspace as the current "pro-".
it's ironic that the co-founder of this stupid craze has drowned

... and didn't the founder of jogging die of a heart attack ?
Question Author
I ran from Glasgow Queen street to Central station one night 15 years ago when I was 27 after 5 bottles of lager and never having done any exercise in my life. It was 1/2 mile and I made it in 5 minutes and I made my train but my heart went into overdrive and I was taken to hairmyres hospital in East Kilbride with atrial fibrillation the next morning after being in it for over 9 hours with a resting heart rate of 165. I was put on a drip and it was 24 hours before I came out of AF. From then on I always maintain that exercise is bad for you!!
... and didn't the founder of jogging die of a heart attack ?

Yes.
Nothing to do with the lager then?
I've been nominated. I intend to cheat with warm water.
I liked the joke in the Mirror today, he did it to his mother-in-law, ambulance rushing her off.
how can anyone invent jogging,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,it's running ?
"the founder of jogging"?
Humans have been jogging/running for thousands of years!
From the link "drowns to death" - is there another outcome then?

The words Foxtrot Oscar spring to mind!
//it's ironic that the co-founder of this stupid craze has drowned//

Almost as ironic as the death of the inventor of the segway...
