My local authority has been controlled by Tories, LibDems and also a spell of NOC. Very little has changed for the better. My council tax has increased way beyond inflation over the years, my dustbins have been emptied increasingly less frequently, the pavements in my immediate area are a disgrace. Meantime various "community centres" for waifs and strays have been opened across the area; charges have been introduced at the local dump - unless you're on benefits, natch (meaning, astonishingly, fly tipping has become more commonplace), "advice centres" for the feckless have proliferated; council tax money is given to local groups which benefit a very few members of the population. Council Tax has become just a wealth redistribution scheme taking cash from people who pay, providing free services for those who don't, and charging those who pay additional fees for the same services. None of this has been any different regardless of who has controlled the authority. At the same time local councillors' "allowances" have increased to such a point that few if any of them see a need to undertake gainful employment.
Like PCCs, local authorities are an expensive joke. The trouble is, the joke is on the mugs who are shelling out for the circus.
