Can anyone tell me when and why our young people began to over use the over word LIKE in their sentences? Was there a moment or a person responsible, or a TV programme or a fashion that I missed at the time .... like?

Back in the mid 60's I went out with a lad from Liverpool. Every second word was like. It annoyed me so much I dumped him. When Dad asked where he was I said I dumped him like. He laughed about it for days.

verbal tics of all kinds exist, and like OG said these get copied by peer groups.

The sloaney 'Yah' instead of yes
'err...' while you pause and think
'kind of'
'Like' and 'So' are just one group of sounds that announce to the listener that you're still speaking, or about to speak, or are a little uncertain.

When I was a child in the 50s, a lady in our road was known as Mrs. LikeReally, she finished every sentence with those two words, never made any sense.

It's been used in the Borders forever,sort of at the end of a question,but not like kids do in their vocabulary.
