ice cream from vans

is there a specific name for the ice cream that is squirted out from dispensers onto a wafer cone in ice cream vans- and why isn't it avilable in shops and supermarkets?

I've always known it as 'whippy' or whipped ice-cream.

It can't be sold for home freezers because it needs the air churned into it on dispensing to make it so soft.

You could try the cheapest tub of soft scoop ice cream and beat it vigouroulsy with a wooden spoon.

Not the same I know.

We used to sell it in the corner shop I work in. It was that much hassle cleaning it it and adding the ingredients everyday, the owner got rid of the machine after a couple of months.

...the machines do take hours to clean and steralize, and the regulations are very strict as soft icecream is prone to salmonela, and lystiria so be very careful where you buy it from, as I know the icecream vans are easier to dodge the health inspectors!.... I bought a home icecream machine a couple of years back, this makes very similar icecream as it's churned and you can stop it at your prefered consistancy....

Here in the U.S., it's called Soft Serve as opposed to Hand Scooped. The machines have been around for a number of years but seems to have originated with a company called Dairy Queen. They are still in existence, but most fast food outlets have "Soft Serve", now days...

You can buy soft serve ice cream makers on the internet if you are so inclined! Amazon do one by Rival for a price of �37.

I still prefer the ice cream that came in big churns and the ice cream man would scoop it out with a big spoon and mould it on top of the ice cream cone
