I'm getting my 1st smart phone tomorrow, which comes with a new sim card. How do I get the numbers off my old phone to the new one? BTW, I suffer from serious Ludditus:-)

Is you old phone also a Nokia. Some have a data transfer programme that will allow a transfer across. If you can use the same SIM card then save the contacts to the card but quite often the smart phones have a different size card. If this is the case you may have to manually enter the numbers again:(

It did exactly what I wanted it to do, i.e. copy 200 names and numbers from old Sim card to new one when I was forced to change mobile suppliers.

This item is also available from Amazon (search for "Sim card copier") but gets very poor reviews. However, I repeat, I had no probs whatsoever and for less than three quid I thought it worth a punt, certainly when the alternative was the tedious task of manual copying.

You can use your old sim- just ask them to cut it to nano size at a shop. They can also plug your phone to a computer and transfer all your info that way.

just put the old sim into the new phone and transfer the numbers from the sim to the phone. Then you can put your new sim back in. I only discovered recently that if your sim doesn't fit, you can cut it to suit & it still works.

I gather that the phone provider can switch the numbers at their end, or i could use bluetooth...whatever that is

It might help us to know where you are getting / have got your new phone from.
If it's from one of the High Street shops switching numbers and transferring your address book can easily be done "in store". If you've got it from say, Amazon it might not be so easy.
Also perhaps a bit more difficult if you are changing manufacturer of phone and or phone provider.

Bluetooth is simply the name given to a certain standard of wireless connection. Many things support it but your phones would both need to for them to communicate with each other.

The phone provider can switch the numbers at their end ? What without you going to them and handing over the phones ? interesting. Wonder what other personal info they can get to then.

As a matter of interest OG, when Asda mobile moved from Vodafone to EE they transferred my old number to my new Sim card, so it can be done!

I'm unsure how they moved, did they send you a new SIM or just reprogrammed the one you had ?

In either case a service provider can change the mobile data on the SIM, it's accessing the handset directory I feel is somewhat lacking in privacy. Especially if it is the phone (i.e. handset) provider rather than the service provider doing the change.
