Much to my surprise, I love being retired. I loved the job I'd had for the last 18 years, and it was the structure in my life, I thought that I would be aimless at home all day - oh no I'm not! I devote more time to the three voluntary committees I belong to, three voluntary organisations, I volunteer at a seafront shop one morning a week, I have at last time for my craft work, I have time to be interested in things - and I'm no longer stressed and pulled from pillar to post by the requirements of the job. It's good. I couldn't vegetate and just be domestic (I didn't do that when I was working!).
Best thing about being retired is to switch the alarm clock off and go back to sleep ..... heavenly in the winter, on dark cold wet mornings!
Not to mention the mornings when it was knee deep in snow and you had to get to work, come hell or high water!
if you're in decent health and ever at a loose end. I'd suggest voluntary work. very rewarding ,
The actuary ensured I am not retired yet. But when I do I intend to do very little for a few months, then get my act together and see how many old interests my income will allow me to stretch to. That said I have a lot of DIY jobs I need to finish both in the house and in the garden.
Officially an OAP since last August but actually finished work through ill health in 2001 and I'm enjoying every minute especially since Trish finished as well so now we do what we want, when we want, the only day that is ever planned is Thursdays when we shop for an old friend who is now housebound
I'm loving it... I bake a lot, do crosswords, gardening make Jams and preserves (to take to the children) and don't have to watch the clock.... but the best thing is I'm able to visit my children every month. Half my time is spent at home and the other half in Edinburgh with them
