I've always thought that this was the brain reacting to the imminent death and remembering its birth, along a tunnel into a bright light. It is often said the brain remembers everything so what is more natural then to remember something it has experienced rather then invent something at the time of death.
If you're really interested in this dd, read some of Elizabeth Kubler-Ross's books on near death experiences and the dying. She was an American psychiatrist who pioneered near death studies. You will learn a lot.
She was a great supporter of people suffering from AIDs as well and had her house burned down, it is believed by people opposed to her work with AIDs victims.

My OH had a car accident years ago where he banged into a stone wall head on. He says he felt an overwhelming sense of peace and felt himself come out of his body on a rope and he was hovering above the scene. He can even remember saying oh *** I've done it this time. Then all of a sudden he felt a jerk and the next thing he knew he was back in the car. At this point he was about 19 years old and had never heard or seen programs on near death experiences. It was a long time before he told anyone and when he did they explained it to him. I'm not making this up its absolutely true and would love to know the possible 'scientific' reason for it.
I didn't experience anything, all I remember was pain until the morphia kicked in then waking up in a hospital bed with a load of needles and pipes stuck into me ten days later. In between I'd apparently been given the Last Rites of the Catholic Church which meant I wasn't expected to live, but there was no bright light to walk to,no friends and relations waiting to guide me to the next life, in fact nothing at all that I've ever remembered.
dieseldick, this is a subject that ive had an interest in for some years. Theres no doubt that these experiences happen but what exactly that experience is who can say? Theres some anecdotal evidence that people who experience 'negative' NDE's actually go on to experience 'positive' NDE's given enough time.
The main argument that NDE's are no more than the product of a dying brain were made popular by Dr Susan Blackmore's book, Dying to live

According to the sceptics, NDE's are the result of anoxia, hypercarbia etc. Many of these theories have been questioned since.
Vulcan makes the point that NDE's are a re remembering of the birth experience. This was a theory of Carl Sagan but people who have been born by caesarian section have reported NDE's with tunnel and light experiences also.
Personally Im an agnostic sceptic but sceptical explanations of NDE's dont cut it for me at present.
BTW im sozzled at the moment otherwise I might have had the inclination to post a few links, maybe tomorrow. ;-)

I have just had a weird experience in hospital . I woke up 1am. and believed I was standing up ' . The room was bathed in a sort of etherial light and there were lots of dials and I could hear female voices talking and singing. " Lord Jesus accept our brother " . This lasted 5 or 6 minutes .
I must have called out because suddenly the ordinary light came on and a nurse asked me if I was alright. She also said I had been transported to Rochester, ( wherever that is ) and was rather confused. ! I was in fact not standing but lying down and may have been suffering from oxygen deficiency. Something similar happened either the same night or the next
( I was confused ! ). Weird ! Unsettling ! I can well believe shortage of oxygen may be the explanation.
