Hi there

anyone taken cuttings from wisteria? If so, when and how and was it successful and how long before you could plant it out.

I know it is a climber, but is is considered a tree and required to be grafted onto something, or is it just a regular plant

(obviously, I'm not a very good gardner, but I'd like to be!)

The best method of propergation that I know is serpentine layering in spring. Take a long whippy branch thats close to the ground and peg it down into a 4" pot and bury the pot in the ground almost to the top, it will help if you slightly damage the branch by twisting or cutting to stimulate rooting, you can repeat this several times along the same branch or use differant ones. hopefully they should have taken in one year and should be ready for lifting and planting out.

Or you could try 3"-4" softwood cuttings in early spring using rooting hormone, may take 12- 18 months Good Luck.

thanks thunderbird. I might have to do the softwood cuttings. My wisteria is planted in the drive and there is a small amount of earth around it and the rest is block paved!

mimififi, I dont think its that important to bury them in the ground, I think the main reason for this is to help them stay put.

You may like to try it without burying the pots but use slightly bigger ones, weighted with plenty of crocks in the bottom and maybe a largish pebble on top of the wire 'U' shaped peg to keep it all in place. All the Best.

not sure about propagation but my Wisteria is growing in a pot like a smallish weeping willow...
