Pathetic Fallacy?

Don't know if this is the right section but.....Son's homework last night was defining 'pathetic fallacy' as a grammatical term, giving examples, and then explaining the difference between pathetic fallacy and personification -Mon Dieu! never heard of 'pathetic fallacy' and what a strange term, can anyone explain why its 'pathetic' and why it a 'fallacy?
