is it possible to get cheap train tickets,travelling from london to manchester,prices i've seen are scandalous

Booking in advance can reduce the price a lot.

My wife and I travelled from Birmingham to Edinburgh a few years ago on Virgin for �30 each as we booked early.

Yes - travel off peak and book in advance. In theory up to the day before but they often sell out before then.
