Perth is a wonderful city and very much overlooked as most tend to go for the east side. Very clean and green great year round weather loads to do and see. Only downside really is the flight being cooped up in not a lot of space for 22 hrs is not so good. At least with Perth its a shorter flight than to the east. Ive always flew with Malaysian Airlines and they are very good.
I would agree that Perth is very nice too. The Great barrier reef was a highlight of my trip. Went scuba diving on the reefs. I would give Alice Springs a miss. Most people go there to see Ayers rock. What i didn't realise was that Ayers rock is 6 hours bus journey away from Alice springs. You can fly to Ayers rock but at extra expense. The Whitsunday Islands are also very nice. We took a three day sailing trip around them and visited the most beautiful beach with Clear blue waters. It was called Whitesands. It features on a lot of adverts in the uk Advertising travelling to Australia.
Sydney harbour, Ayers Rock and Great Barrier Reef are the usual top three, I think. Perth is nice but a long way from anything else. I'm told Adelaide is worth a visit - vineyards - but I haven't been there. You could take the train across country if you like being in the desert.
If you get the chance go to Airlie Beach - the place itself is not that great but from here you can do three day sailing trips around the Whitsunday Islands - and it is simply paradise - a particular place called Hill Inlet around the islands is just the most beautiful place I have ever seen. I spent over a year out in OZ and it was the most spectacular place I visited.

I would definately recommend a three day sailing trip round the Whitsundays. I spent a couple of months in Oz last year and that was my favorite bit. Other things to do while your there - Watch an Ozzie rules football game. Hire 4x4 and get off the beaten track up north and see some crocs (don't get out though!), Blue mountains just west of Sydney. Have fun. But..... if I were you I'd go to New Zealand!!

We went to Perth - lovely. Go on the Swan River to the wineries. Also, Freemantle and Rotnest Island. We also went to Cairns - very hot, but so pleased we went. We went snorkeling on the Great Barrier Reef - fabulous. Sydney was also not to be missed. Loved the Blue Mountains and we often took the ferry to Manley Beach - we preferred it to Bondi. Have a great time !!
