Tapping A Phone Line - Legally !!!!

I'm wondering if there's anything out there that I can plug into a landline, so I can listen in to any phone calls that are made to and from the landline??
I can't see there being any legal issues, as the person in question has agreed to this .... don't ask - LONG story !!
Ideally, something that records the phone calls as well would be better, plus the ability to listen in remotely.
Does anything like this exist ??

I know there are devices that you can attach to record your calls.

But remeber you are suposed to inform people that you are recording the call.

Don't know if Maplin's would have anything to help.

If you have 2 landline phones with the same number, you can listen in on the other phone .I'm sure you could record the call on a mobile phone or something?

No - so long as one side knows and consents, it is lawful

This means that consent to do this in the UK is 'one sided' - so long as one side knows it is OK. One case in the High Court the judge said - people take their own notes of conversations and are not prohibited -- and recording a call in his opinion was exactly the same

and accounts for so many conversations that you are sure are recorded which you arent told about - because the other side has been.

I think -Talbot- already knows that you Can Not record telephone calls and pass them to a third party. Furthermore, apart from listening-in to calls within one's own private domain, it is completely illegal to tap telephones of other people.

actually GM has said listen and not record - and this comes under the term ( monitor ) which is certainly lawful in all sorts of contexts

Your employer can and probably does monitor your emails for various things child porn and harassment spring to mind and dont have to tell you.


There is a medical regulation case where the accused doctor had in fact recorded all phone calls and most conversations of his accusers ( other doctors ) . The accusers were pretty aghast at this - since some of the things they were alleging were ahem not borne out by the recordings, and the lawyers didnt turn a hair as one side knew he was doing it.

I am pretty sure the English law on emails and phone calls are identical arent they ?

[ my claim to fame is that I did dob in my employer for recording our phone calls. I am now retired (!) which is kinda why I did it ]

Thanks for the input peeps.
The recordings will not be available for anyone else to listen to. We need the recording ability, as we won't be able to monitor the calls 24/7. Once they've been listened to, they'll prob be deleted.
Anyway, I did a quick google search and the first item I found was over $1500 - a "bit" out of our price range .... the search continues .....
