What Is The Problem Now???
7 Answers
Long story short,Sky where giving me aprox 7Gbps download speed, and we where not coping with that,so we switched to Virgin, and now get 13 Gbps when running slow, and I have clocked 28!
Now the problem is still the same though,Ps3 now wired to hub/router,still suffering from, and I quote 'being too slow' even when it is the only thing using the internet.
New problems-
I am upstairs on my laptop, but the signal strength has fallen 2-3 bars and I am getting buffering for the first time in years! As for my son in the bedroom next to me,because the router had to go in the living room, next to the tivo box,he can hardly get a signal at all.It was so bad the speed test crashed.
So why is the Ps3 still slow? How can I have a happy hubby on Playstation Home and the rest of the family able to watch stuff/use facebook etc.
we did have a repeater used upstairs years ago,it was a pig to set up and no one can remember how,can anyone recommend one?
Much thanks for any answers,I am going potty!!

Sorry for the lack of info, yes,I am in the uk,and have the Virgin up to 30Mbps package. As far as I know we have the standard issue 'superhub' and a tv box.
I have tried all the tricks I could think of as far as switching stuff on and off, including disconnecting the cordless phone.
As usual,nothing seems to help.
Someone mentioned that it might be down to traffic, but I have never been affected like this before. However, this time of night, the Ps3 seems to have fewer problems, but it was ok Christmas evening for a bit, when I would of thought traffic would of been bad.
Do you think it is worth ringing Virgin and seeing if they can at least move the router? The engineer(that fitted it) said it had to be by the tv box,but it was his last job of the night and maybe he just wanted an easy life.
BTW,just noticed my signal has gone up to 4 bars for the first time tonight!

Start by connecting a computer to the router with an ethernet cable. (Your router should have come with on. If you can't find it you can buy one in Poundland for the obvious price).
Then run speed tests here

If you get poor speeds then the fault is with the service provided by Virgin and you need to refer the problem to them.
If you get good speeds then the problem lies between your router and the devices which are taking a signal from it (or, if you're certain that it's only with one device, such as your PS3, pssibly just with that device). The most obvious cause is that there's interference on the channel being used by the router and the most likely reason for that is that a neighbour has a router using the same channel (although interference can also can come from other electronic devices, such as TVs, computers and monitors). So my suggestion would be to try changing the channel:

The problem seems to be the extreme workload place upon the System over the Xmas Holiday period. So many people are using the internet at the same time which results in slow speeds and outages.
We are with Virgin and experienced the same problem for about 3 days, i.e very slow speeds and loss of internet altogether.
Since last night the system has been fine.
Just tested our download speed a few minutes ago and it is 28.3 mbps, which is fine.

Thanks Chris,I will run those tests today and then see what's what. From the quick look I had the other day,I think the router is on auto channel, which might explain the way sometimes it is OK do you think?
It was also 'nice' to hear that others also had a problem,so thats for that,redman41.Hope everything is alright now.
As far as the signal to my sons room goes though, can Virgin move the router to where I want it,or was the engineer telling the truth?

It is better to call for a technical help from your ISP. meanwhile try with the following steps,
1.)Reset the wireless router by using the power switch on it or by unplugging it and plugging it back in.
2.)Place the wireless router in an ideal location. The higher it is, the better, but don't put it near metal objects.
3.)Get as close as possible to the router with whatever device you're trying to connect.
4.)Keep the router and your connecting device away from other electronics. You should especially keep away from phones, fax machines and microwaves. etc.,
5.)Adjust the Wifi antenna if it has one.
6.)Change the router's channel, especially if other wireless routers are nearby.Following these steps would give you stable internet connection and also increased speed in connection. You can check your internet speed from http:// www.sca nmyspee d.com/ before and after following these steps.
