I had the MOT done on my car a week ago and it failed due to corroded brake pipes. They did the work for me there and then.Since then the first time I apply the brakes there is a grinding sound , it doesn't happen after the first time. The garage are saying it could be corrosion as it can happen quickly . Does this sound right ? I haven't a clue about cars so any help on this would be appreciated . TIA.

If it didn't happen before then I'd take it back to the garage - corrosion doesn't happen that quickly, IMO, unless it was there before. Did they replace the brake pipes (or did they say they did)? - has it passed MOT now?
jasmin, did they replace anything else besides the corroded brake pipes ?. IE, brake pads or brake shoes ?.

Boxy the car passes it MoT the same day after they changed the brake pipes and also the wheel cylinder.

when you hear the noise, is there any movement , sort of forward/ backward, felt in the brake pedal?
Question Author
it feels normal when I am braking it just the grinding noise I am worried about Vulcan.
If there is no movement in the pedal then that means the discs are OK, they're not warped. The noise will be, as others have said, rust or worn brake pads. Seeing as the car has passed the MOT then that should mean the pads are also OK so that leaves rust. If it's not too bad, it can be removed by gentle braking. If that doesn't work then the discs need to be cleaned with a wire brush or a sanding machine. If they are very bad and the rust has pitted the discs then they need to be replaced.

so should I give it a few days before I go back to garage ?
Provided the car feels OK when you're braking and stops in a straight line I'd give it a few days. Can you identify where the noise is coming from ie front/back/left/right wheel and then have a look at that disc?

Hi I went back to the garage this morning and they took it for a test run and could hear the noise too. They identified it was coming from the rear of the car. It was stripped down and a build up of rust was cleaned off one of the discs (?). I think that's right anyway . I drove it home and there was no noise so hopefully that's sorted it now. Better still they didn't charge me . Thank you for all your help .
All's well again then, jasmin. Glad it's sorted.
Good news jasmin, glad they didn't charge, it should have been picked up at the MOT.
