I posted this on an earlier thread but it vanished. Did anyone ever clean their teeth with soot. I remember my mother making me put my toothbrush up the chimney and then brushing my teeth with it. It took ages to clear it from my mouth. It was yet another of my mothers old wives tales.

I remember the soot craze in theory it was supposed to make your teeth whiter. I also remember Eucryl, also Gordon Moore's cosmetic toothpaste which turned your gums red ? I pestered my mum to buy some but when I went to the dentist with red gums he went beserk and told my mum off ! Now I use Neem toothpaste its green and from the Neem plant, I buy lots of it in Goa because its only about 75p but over here you can buy it at some dentists and they charge £4.50 + for one tube.
Put your toothbrush up the chimney, then make you clean your teeth with it?

That's child abuse.
Try the charcoal!!! Just a couple times a week not every day has to be activated tho not from the chimney lol
Yes I remember that, but we didn't do it, we used bi-carb to clean our teeth. I remember my mother had me sniffing salt water up my nose because I had a cold or blocked nose. My MIL was an old witch she had all her kids (10) taking all sorts of concoctions and poultices for chest rubs, tummy troubles etc. She advised me to use marshmallow when I got mastitis, arnica for bruises, and some herbal cream for spots.
I still use Eucryl.. Brush with it on the electric toothbrush for a few minutes, then colgate or such like on my manual brush... Keeps the stains and the plaque away
Eucryl also available in "Savers" stores
