Algae growth in fish tanks (aquariums) has the same cause(s) as it's growth in ponds and lakes. The organism that's growing has sufficient light and nutrients. It's a primitive organism and doesn't repsond well to attempts to control it. Some experts even say that a clean tank aids in it's propagation more than a dirty one. At any rate, some fish growers have had a little success in limiting the available natural light. The phosphorous, nitrogen and other nutrients on which it feeds are all readily avialable from the excess fish food and fish waste... You might try a few more live plants in the tank to see if that helps, since large, fresh water aquariums in museums, etc., strive for a balance in the environment of the tank and use quite a lot of aquatic plants...
