Ok we worked it out we think !

A has 3 straight lines in its make-up hence SSS
B has one straight line and 2 curves hence SCC
C has one curve hence C
and D has one straight and one curve hence SC
Therefore E has 4 straight lines hence the answer is SSSS

btw the question was part of a series of brain teasers passed aroundthe pub at the weekend :)
