In the old days of bulky 240/12v transformers one would never leave cables attached to the mains when devices were unattached because of the fear of coils burning out. Now my iphone & ipad are connected to the mains with a 3 pin plug & a detachable usb cable which also is used to connect to PC for the purpose of syncing. My question is can the cables be safely left connected to the mains when my devices are detached ?

Mine are and never had any problems.
There is always a small risk with any mains powered device left unattended. I would add that by unplugging the charger you will extend its life.

My PC set-up has a number of these types of devices powering various peripherals (powered speakers, Ethernet hub etc). I avoid leaving everything powered by having them all fed via a multi-way extension lead which I unplug when the PC is not in use.

Thanks guys for your prompt answers, I think I will play it safe by keeping the 3 pin plugs out of mains contact when not in use.
