Do you know anyone that might be considered a loner...someone that keeps themselves to themselves?
Have read a few cases recently in my local press that has described the circumstances of recently deceased people as having been loners. One such case involved a man that was found hung in a local forest. Neighbours described him as friendly but a loner who kept himself to himself.
I've often thought that certain occupations (ie: long distance lorry drivers) lend themselves to the kind of person that is comfortable with been on their own but is there a difference with been comfortable on your own and loneliness?

I love being on my own and am very happy with my own company in general, but when I was a single parent I found the hours until bedtime after getting back home for the day soul-destroying. I had no phone or computer and knew that once I'd shut the front door, I wouldn't see or speak to another person (except for the baby) for the rest of the day. That was loneliness and I wouldn't wish it on anyone (who didn't want it).
Nothing I dislike more than being alone except when on a hard walk.. Luckily its snap between us Jordyboy and I hope you are fit and well.

I don't know if this is just me who thinks this way but whenever I hear the word I always imagine someone slightly deranged, smelling faintly of Germolene and with various nefarious and unhealthy habits.

IMHO there is a world of difference between a loner and someone who enjoys solitude and their own company
Note to self... Bin the Germoline.
sniff....sniff....I was wondering who it was
I'm not a loner, I'm sociable, but I'm very happy in my own company if OH isn't here. He's a long distance driver and he's certainly no loner either - he's comfortable working alone (much prefers that, doesn't like it so much when they send him out with a second driver), but when he's home, he's sociable.

Loneliness is very different, a friend wouldn't go on holiday on his own so doesn't go - it's very sad not to be comfortable in your own skin. I feel sad for people who won't stay alone in the house in the evenings because they are lonely. That way lies nights in the pub - not a good way to deal with it....
I live alone, with my dog, and love it. Always been independent, always will be !
