On BBC news tonight he was shown enjoying a beer with some party colleagues. I couldn't help but notice how small the glasses were. They looked as though they'd hold no more than a quarter pint. Is that a standard measure in English pubs?
If contrasted with William Hague's 14 pints a day when he worked as a drayman's helper it makes Clegg look a bit wimpish.

Anneasquith, it was something we could aspire to, like having an indoor toilet and a bath. Few then achieved either the Gannex or the bathroom but it was a dream.
a bath....................... my God, you were posh .

It was only a zinc thing that was pulled out in front of the fire when everybody else had gone to bed.
Plumbed in baths were a luxury beyond even our dreams.
I suppose next, you will be telling us you had shoes to go to school . ?
Question Author
WE did indeed. But my brother and I had to share a pair between us. To this day the sole of my left foot is as tough as old boots.
I always remember the remark of Sir Alec-Douglas Home, then PM, commenting on a claim by Harold Wilson that he had no boots to go to school in; "If Mr. Wilson had no boots it was merely that he was too big for them!"

It wasn't til years later I realised if we'd swapped shoes every other day we'd have grown up to have normal feet. :-(

In the 60s Sir Alec Douglas Home seemed like a hangover from a bygone age as far as politics went.
...but he damn near well won the 64 election and had it not been for Profumo he probably would have done.

True enough. Maybe the time for grouse-shooting aristos had passed. I remember a Tory on a chat show around that time, Halisham I think, remarking that he couldn't afford to buy cheap suits. He meant, of course, that a decent one would last for years but it didn't come across like that. That was a time when I had one pair of jeans to my name.
There is a lot of truth in that. I remember a woman who saved up for ages to buy an expensive winter coat because, "I'm too poor to afford a cheap one"
Why was there a stand selling beer at the Lib Dem conference?
If you had to attend a Lib Dem conference, wouldn't you be grateful for a local anaesthetic?

Cloverjo, could it have been brewed by members of the muesli-munching, sandal wearing, weirdie beardie, wing of the party?
