I feel a bit sorry for the man, he is getting on a bit and it cannot be nice in their Jails but why do people go to foreign countries and think they can do what they like and then get bailed out by the UK Government?

This is just the latest case, we see hetersexual couple in Saudi mis-behaving and women refusing to abide by the local laws.

I know we dont give a damn about the indigenous populations culture in the UK but it is well known that other countries are very proud of theirs so why do it?

I notice that Sky nails its colours to the mast from the off - alebit inaccurately -

"The family of a British tourist jailed in Morocco for being gay are campaigning for his release."#

He was not arrested for 'being gay', he was arrested because he had compromising images on his phone which led the police to believe he had acted illegally according to their laws.

I cannot believe that they simply walked up to a British tourist and asked to see his phone. Does that really sound likely?

Far more plausible is that the police have been given evidence that this man has contravened a law or laws, and the evidence is on his phone, and they acted upon that evidence.

So he is not being held for being gay at all - and it is nonsense to say that he is.
I am still find this arrest of a gay Westerner in Morocco to be ironic in the extreme, given the countries past welcoming of gays from all over the world.
Some clarification required surely?

Does anyone actually know what the law is in Morocco?

I mean, if you are caught in possession of evidence which shows you to be gay - then Sky (and other news providers) have been accurate.

However, if the law is against 'homosexual acts', then the pictures found by the police would have to demonstrate that they occurred.

I just need to look something up...be a mo'.
Yep...as I thought.

It's not cut and dried. I was in Marrakech earlier this year, and didn't think twice about local laws - and me and my partner were sharing a double bed.

It's not good enough to say, "Well it's their laws", because they are not laws that are strictly adhered to.

Indeed , from the following link:

Homosexuality is considered relatively common, though rarely acknowledged, amongst Moroccan men. Even though illegal and punishable with imprisonment, the lack of everyday integration between the sexes has lent itself to a general and subtle tolerance toward male effeminate behavior. Platonic affection between Moroccan males -- such as holding hands, which is a sign of friendship and respect -- is freely shown, and some of the Berber tribes (the Atlas Chleuh, for example) are known as particularly tolerant toward homosexual behavior.

For both gays and lesbians, discretion is advised. Avoid public displays of affection, as this is something that is even frowned upon when shown by a heterosexual couple. Tangier -- the world's first gay resort -- is still considered somewhat gay-friendly.

Marrakech certainly has a mini gay scene, thanks largely to the number of gay French couples now residing there.
So in answer to your original question youngmafbog, it's possible that this tourist thought he was being discrete, but was unfortunate to enough to be apprehended by a policeman who was a ***.

So you did think twice about local laws!

Either Morocco isn't gay-friendly, in which case he shouldn't have gone there unless he was looking for trouble; or it is gay-friendly, in which case he must have done something unacceptable in their (normally fairly tolerant) eyes.

These two situations are very similar, differing only in how far one has to push things before getting into trouble, because at its heart the country has anti-homosexual legislation.

If I was gay, I would choose not to spend my time and money in countries that legislated against my very way of life. As somebody with gay friends and relatives, normally I wouldn't choose to even though I'm not gay. In other words, this chap only has himself to blame.
Ellipsis

To confirm - I didn't think twice about local laws.

The rest of my post is a quote from the link I provided.
Furthermore - a country can be both gay-friendly and gay-unfriendly simultaneously.
i can´t praise Morroco enough, they bend over backwards for you, you can take that any way you want.
In my limited experience, I have found Middle Eastern countries extremely tolerant of foreigners who violate the local customs and laws, providing of course that they are not "blatant" violations necessitating direct action.

Of course, if for other reasons the host country, for reasons best known to itself, want to get rid of this foreign intruder, then using these laws provides a good excuse.

I wonder if this was the case here?

like Webster's dictionary we're Morocco bound..."♫

Don't think that that may make the top ten of gay anthems!
I am still reeling at the thought of a Western Gay man being persecuted in Morocco.....seems like biting the hand that feeds them to me.

"That`s quite long for a holiday alone, I would have thought" According to the Independent he wasn`t alone. He went there to visit a local man.
Now released apparently ::::
