blending colours

I have seen some modern paintings where the colours are finely blended in horizontal lines. How do you do this?

it's really what painters have always done... I guess it involves gradually mixing the two colours, increasing the yellow and decreasing the blue (or whatever). That's for brush painting; modern ones may be painted in other ways, such as with airbrushes
