Tom Sharpe's first book 'Riotous Assembly' about the situation in South Africa during apartheid was so funny it took me a week to read it. I literally kept falling on the floor helpless with laughter. Sometimes it took an hour or more before I could stop laughing enough to continue reading.
The book so incensed the SA government that it got him deported from South Africa where he lived as it so effectively took the p*** out of apartheid .
janbee all Tom Sharp's books were hilarious , but in my opinion 'Riotous Assembly' was the best of all. I still laugh to myself when I picture Konstable Ells ( was that the name?) his hopeless incompetence .
Balthazar Verkamp and Dr Bloemenstien..... I nearly wet myself and Els; Els was a brilliant character and his interaction with Van Heerden was brilliant. Sharpe is one of THE BEST COMEDY authors of the lot... Brilliant stuff, all of it, anachronistic, relevent and damn funny at the same time hard to pull that one off.
