Dog Bleeding From Back End
8 Answers
my dogs poohs have been moosey and light coloured for last few weeks. Took him to the vets a few days ago to get his anal glands emptied (as hes been biting his back end) However the biting has continued, Hes been very clingy and lethargic. Ive just been checked his poohs in the garden and they all have bright red blood in. The last pooh hes done is pure blood (about 3 teaspoons). Im taking him to the vet at 6.30 tonight. Has this happened to any of your dogs ?

It's not necessarily an indication of malignancy but could be severe gastrointestinal inflammation.
In Alfie's case it was down to contact with smoked salmon (he'd pinched the wrapper from the bin).

Yes My boys used to get it when they were younger, its called haemorrhagic diarrhoea. The vet used to give an anti inflammatory injection and a course of antibiotics and he'll need to go on a bland diet for a few days. It is caused by a bad stomach upset making ulcers in the lower intestine. The cause of the stomach upset can vary, so if treating the the bloody runs doesn't clear it, then you'll need to get the root cause sorted.
I'm pleased to read other posters comments before posting my own which doesn't have such a happy ending. My Beagle, 15 years ago, started to have bloody poos and he died through liver failure. Poor lovely boy I'd only had him three months.
I don't remember the blood being bright red though so I expect what the others say is the case.
