Looks like the Synod is not yet ready to join the 21st century though, and for some time to come I'll wager.

I always thought that Celibacy was enforced in the middle ages by the catholic church for its priests so that none of the churches wealth could be inherited by wives, sons and daughters. Totally agree with vetuste enemmi.

It's a good point but since when did any priests get their hands on any church wealth personally?
Wages or upkeep? Yes.
Money saved up? I doubt it. No banking until the middle ages plus all that eye of a needle stuff to worry about. No need to save up either, so long as they kept receiving income.
Anyone with a wife and family would naturally demand a higher salary, to pay for them. Could have been just a penny-pinching measure by the Pape?
I also fully agree with vetuste_ennemi.
Meanwhile: global poverty and Papal gold reserves… join the dots.
