Very enjoyable, thanks, Dysart. I am just getting the scissors out to mutilate my grid (not as fiddly and worrying as I initially feared it might be!) Finding those ten letters missing from wordplay has been the biggest challenge, even when it became obvious what they were going to tell me. Thank you for a worthy challenge.

This is not a theme to which I have previously paid much attention, but, as a good puzzle should, this has aroused my interest. Can anyone knowledgeable recommend a good book to start with? The Wikipedia entry on the first of the companions (4) gives an interesting selection from which to choose, but there are presumably others as well.
Really enjoyable - fun struggling through this after a visit to London for other crosswords. Black out or leave blank? Bottom left no problem - read preamble carefully and the word is fine, at least that's how it stung me. 24Ac certainly gave me trouble as did 20 Down - the last two to give way. Very good all thew ay through - thanks Dysart
