My sister-in-law is mortified as her kids have come home with nits. It was my mothers worst nightmare as well.

Whatever happened to the Nit Nurse that used to come around regularly in my youth ?

Andy.....it's a bit of a myth that lice only live on clean hair......I dealt with lice on children who were clean and cared for and children who didn't see a bath or soap for months..... The annoying thing was.....the parents of the uncared for children believed that myth.....and were chuffed and a bit smug.....a lousy head was something to sort of brag...

My grandmother had one of those. The cover served as a bench.
I struggled with nits last summer with Mini Boo, who'd even passed them onto me!

The only way they eventually went was a nightly ritual of conditioning her hair and running a Nitti Gritti comb through it, plus the long 7 week hols, away from school! I also genuinely believe her head constantly submerged in sea water (swimming) whilst we were on her jollies helped too, though that's obviously not a scientific fact.

I also really dislike the stigma attached to nits- I sent Mini Boo in to school with a letter stating she'd nits and would her teacher ask the rest of the class to be vigilante, as far as I know that never happened :-(
I think schools are now prevented from telling parents that there has been an outbreak.

A friend of mine stood outside the school gates and told every parent that went in that her son had nits as the Headmistress had told her they couldn't put a letter out. (It's a small school, only about 60 pupils in total.)

This thread is starting to remind me of the Yorkshire Men sketch, from Monty Python ::::

No wonder they can't stop them being passed around time and time again then!

I spent a ruddy fortune on "stuff" for her bonce (and mine!) but like I said i think it was only the fact she was off for the summer that eventually got rid of them.
Our school sends the child home as soon as they spot nits and if you tell them your child came home with nits they send a letter to all the kids in that class. Thing 1 is mega-allergic to nit shampoo so I bought h some herbal stuff -it stank so much we made her sit under an open window.
I used to be lathered up with Derbac soap on my hair, stinking dark brown stuff, then the nits were combed out with a metal fine toothed comb, wasn't it fun?
Thank you, Mikey....who would have thought all those lice I had to clout with a ruler would one day get me a best answer!!.....x
Oh heck!!...When the lice fell onto desks....I didn't clout pupils heads ...honestly..☺
corylus - I remember it well !!!
That sketch predates Monty Python, as Marty Feldman appears in it. i think it was called, "At last the 1948 show".
Use lashings of conditioner, comb wee beesties out thoroughly, and dry off, hair will be nice and shiny so they can't cling on to it, worked for my granddaughter
