I have Virgin Media Broadband at home but I would like to get access to Wifi outside of the home - is it possible to get access to BT Fon and BT Openzone without becoming a BT Wifi customer?

I pay £6 per month for 500 minutes access (with additional time being chargeable if I go over that limit) but I can't see that option currently available to new subscribers on BT's website.
Remember though that there are now lots of places offering free wi-fi anyway, such as all large railway stations, all Wetherspoon's pubs, larger Tesco and Asda stores, all branches of McDonalds, etc, etc.

If you want to access the 'net away from your own Virgin router, why not use a dongle ? I use a Three Network one in my caravan in Cornwall, and it works very well. If it is for occasional use, ie you will be using your own Virgin connection most of the time, a dongle isn't that expensive.
Also, don't forget that lots of places offer free internet access, like McDonalds, etc.
