Enhanced Eye Test

Anyone in the know about eyes, do you reckon it's worth the money..£30-£40.. to have one of these eye tests? Anyone had one done?
We're both due an eye test and are contemplating changing opticians. One of the ones we've made enquiries at offers this enhanced test but we're not convinced its worth the extra.

I paid for one privately through BUPA and that was £90 and quite a few years ago. I have a detached vitreous in my right eye so I felt it was worth the money. If you can get one for £30--£40, then that seems like a good price to me. But, I have to ask, do you NEED one? Won't a basic eye test do?

Exactly, jan, i don't think either of us need one and don't think I'm going to bother with it. However, himself is seriously thinking of having one.
I can't find any independent reviews about it, google just takes you to various opticians who offer it.

I can only speak for myself and I felt it was worth the money but if I had no problems with my eyes then I would just stay with the basic, and very excellent, eye test. It finds all the faults necessary.

I get a free eye test every 12 months and for the last 3 years I've paid £10 for a photo of each eye and this year. for the first time, they found either a burst blood vessel or Glaucoma. They referred me to the local eye hospital and after a consultation, I'm waiting to hear from them...£10 well spent I think.

Wouldn't they have found that anyway though jomlett? I was told by the optician that a glaucoma test is part of the normal eye test.

I also get free eye tests every two years and they always check for glaucoma and ARMD as routine.

Glaucoma Pressure does is done routinely, a basic eye exam is usually sufficient to alert the Tester whether you need referring for more in depth testing.

Thanks both. I get the free eye test cos of relatives suffering Glaucoma, but I was told the only way to detect any abnormalities was the photo.

that little puff of air is a glaucoma test, isn't it? It's been part of every standard test I've had for years.

I have open angle Glaucoma,late diagnosed ( my fault not theirs) abnormal pressure detected via puff test and sent for further investigation.

The key thing is what is an enhanced eye test?
There are regulations to say what needs to be done in an eye examination but the important thing is that you get an eye examination that is investigative into your needs and not just paying extra for tests that you may not need.
I would generally say go to an optician that someone has strongly recommended to you from their experience.

Mr.Mags had an enhanced test for £25, which showed the beginnings of cataracts, which he had removed quickly, so it was worth the money

York, are you saying then that it's not necessary?
Mags, I thought a bog standard eye test would pick up cataracts, and that they can only be operated on when they reach a certain 'ripeness'?'
