Because of the actions of do-gooders over the last few decades. (One wonders whether they ever look at the world around them and see the havoc they have wrought.)

Basically, there is now no discipline applied to children anywhere...at home, at school or in society in general. As a result, they inevitably grow up thinking that whatever they want is what has to happen...and very largely it is! These are the very people we now see putting themselves and their needs before anyone else's. Hence road rage, school stabbings and every other sort of mannerless behaviour.

To stop it? Simple. Get parents and teachers to be in league with each other, as they were until the 60s/70s, rather than enemies and we can then ensure children...who become 'The Angry' eventually...are taught how to behave once more.

i dont have problems with anger anymore (not my own anyway), but then buddhism isnt for everyone. i'm not suggesting that you all take up religion, or change your current religion to buddhism, but it is full of useful techniques for reining in destructive emotions that can be applied within whatever religion you already are part of or without becoming even slightly religious. as for us being less angry in the past, i dont agree, i think thats a selective memory thing we all have :-)

While I agree wholeheartedly that the lack of discipline is a major contributory factor in childrens behaviour,I feel that I must stand up for teachers who are always lumped together with parents as the main deliverers of discipline (personal as well as corrective).Schools only get the children after they have been in sole care of ttheir families for almost 5 years. After that they see the children for 6 hours per school day -thats 195 days per year. The rest of the time children are under the care of their parents and society in general. So - what are YOU doing to stop the rot?

This is the problem, what can I do? I work for a very good comapny who unfortunately decided to move out of town. We have a small 60s shopping precinct. Its a typical concrete jungle, narrow drafty alleys ect ect. At lunchtime it is populated by school kids, we have no schools nearby. They are always very rude. I have seen security men approach them just to be threatened. It depresses me. I am in my late 40s and was always taught to respect elders. Thats seems to have gone out of the window with this generation. We never had any need to carry guns or knives, But then we never used drugs. Perhaps thats the answer, get rid of the drugs on the street. Sorry to run on but, I am sure I am not the only person who feels like this. Doris:-(
I agree totally. I think Quizmonster has already highlighted why I think these things have happened, namely that people (kids and young adults mainly but not exclusively) no longer fear the law simply because there is no consequence for them. They are talking about making it an offence for kids to possess fireworks, but what are they actually going to do when they are caught, nothing thats what. I dont think you can blame teachers as any power they had has been taken away, I'm not advocating beating people with sticks but a quick harmless clip round the ear never did me any harm in the long run, these days you can't even touch a child. I think that mose people are generally decent but as the behaviour of other sinks lower and lower so does the general level of morals for the majority.
I agree with the monster, What needs to happen is for people once again to make use of courtesy and good manners, the primary reason for which is to enable people to live together without killing each other. I know old John Major got a lot of stick over his family values thing but he was right!! BTW I have no kids but two godsons (brothers) who are as polite and nice as you could hope to meet. Lets not tar all youngsters with the same brush

Friends of mine have two grandchildren, they are 5 and 7. Mum went back to work soon after having both. They have had a succsession of minders, nannies, au pairs and goodness know what. The younger one is a little poppett, the older one a monster!!!! I do think teachers and the police should be given some of their powers back.
Welcome to the industrial age were we work work work and spend no time with children to teach them morals, and the more we work the more money we want thus ionevitable money hungry crazed population it really sadddens me I don't understand fists before thought why? indeed!!!!!!!!!!!
People do not have Jesus in their lives and God has been taken out of everything. The good old question, what would Jesus do? well he sure would'nt curse you out and run you off the road and (you can't deny it) people who truly have Jesus in their lives and heart won't run you off the road either.
Who said its only children that are angry? and only adults who are from the 70's onwards? The world id generally a more stressful place to live in nowadays, children are not listened to enough, the ones who misbehave are often some of the brightest. And adults work long hours and have debts, house prices rising etc. war and a million other things contribute to our daily stress, if everyone just chilled out every so often we would be fine, but people worry too much.
Why do you say these days? and where is your research for saying people are more angry? Anger has always been around, perhaps we have the access to more destructive means of displaying anger but I disagree with the "nowadays" hypothesis. Plus we need anger, healthy anger is a problem solving tool, I think what you are talking about is violence and that is very different to anger. Anger is a healthy expression and one of the first ones we experience when going about change. Also violence might also be seen as part of the human condition, without violence how would we defend ourselves and families?

I spoke to a friend of mine about this she is a college lecturer and smart. She says (and it makes some sense) is that society at the moment is in a state of great change. All kinds of people now have increased (although not complete) equality, having achieved it through struggle, and the old social structure of rights and responsibilities is crumbling. Such change, while natural and healthy is also destabilising and this causes us all to be more anxious and stressed...we all know what stress does, it makes us eat more, sleep less well and more likely to explode emotionally. She says you can see our tendency to try to right this in such things as the resurgence of "domestic values" tv and even in home decorating, there is at least one strong trend back to traditional styles. She also says that what each one of us can do, especially the borg, (love that term, see "where are my keys?") is to start with our own behaviour lifestyle and stress levels, much as treaclefight suggests. I know that I have mentioned this before, but there are also websites saying the same thing (Flylady for one) In our small way and by and large, we do that here. We debate, more or less politely, say please and thank you and treat each other with courtesy...like our namesakes, we just have to assimilate others...
