I can't see that (in terms of security, rather than convenience) it's any different to the existing 'scan as you shop' system already used in Sainsbury's.
I've not used it myself but I've seen plenty of people doing it.
Those who do so simply go to the 'Fast Track' point, near to the entrance, where they collect their portable scanning device. To release it from the holder they have to scan their Nectar card. As they put each item into their trolley they scan it with the handheld scanner. When they've finished shopping they go to the Fast Track exit point and place the scanning device into the holder, which displays the total to be paid (in exactly the same way as at any ordinary till).
Totally useless for the likes of me, as my shopping invariably contains an item which requires authorisation from a human, together with the removal of the security tag.
I try to avoid the self-scan and self-checkout facilities.
It's the supermarkets trying to slash their costs and boost their profits by getting us to do the jobs their checkout staff used to do, so that they can sack a percentage of their staff.
They should have signs saying ...
"Please scan your own goods so we can sack some of our employees"
or
"We (the supermarkets) make more money, and you (the tax payers) can look after our former employees when we make them unemployed"
So, go ahead ...
Scan your own stuff.
Use your "clever" App.
Help the big chains slash jobs and make people unemployed.
And enjoy the food, because the people you put out of a job won't be able to afford it.
Blackadder - you're getting Fast Track ansdSelf-Scan mixed up. With Fast-Track you scan yourself as you go around the shop and then go to a till to pay. At that point any security tags are removed etc. The advantage is that special tills are available, so no queing to pay. Self Scan is where you wander round the shop picking up items and then scan them yourself at the exit and, maybe, then have to wait for security tags/authorisation etc.
I use this system in Tesco and although it takes a bit of getting used to, trying to hold a shopping list, a pen, the item and the scanner, it means that I can pack my bags how I want it done, in my time and I don't feel hassled into hurrying up at the check-out as there is generally nobody waiting behind. All round a good idea I think
This reminds me of the "Weigh your own" shops. I once tried it and then went to the local supermarket, where I found that all the items, of dubious provenance, proved to be more expensive than packaged well-known brands.
Thing was the amount on your scanner would never be the same as the amount when you got to the check out because the scanners didn't take off any deals until the end. That might have changed though.
