Just been to my mums and while there she got a call asking if she was having problems with unsolicited phone calls (she does) they then said that they could put a stop to that and it would only cost here 55p a week. I told her to put the phone down (it was on loudspeaker) as it sounded like a scam.
I dont have a landline, so dont get unsolicited calls, but this didnt sound right.
Can anyone advise, thanks

get her to dial 1471 and note the phone number. Presuming it is not a private number, tap it into whocallsme or whocalledme

And register her with the TPS, its free.
It sounds very much like a scam call. AlwaysConfused's advice about TPS is sound. I have caller display and do not answer unless I recognise the number.
They Are trying to get her to pay for a service you can get for free.

I had this call, told them I don't get nuisance calls as I am signed up with BTs free call blocker service and that soon got rid if them.

Once they knew they wouldn't be able to sell me anything, they were off to pester the next person.

Great answers guys, thank you. Does the tps work for all landlines?
Mums got a BT landline but is with the post office service.
Putting 'unsolicited calls 55p per week' into Google brings up loads of links about this, including this one:

Yes, This a scam. Ive had this one lots of times. I just tell them i dont get problem calls and they ring off.
I'm registered with TPS and I get loads of unsolicited calls. I have to answer as Doc, nursers etc all withold their number. Today I've had 5 calls that begin with 'Dear Customer' I just hang up.
What am I doing wrong? We never get any of these calls....I'm jealous!
TPS doesn't stop calls from abroad.
100% scam. Have NOTHING to do with it.
I'm with the TPS and still get a lot of unsolicited calls. I've been told that calls from abroad get through.
Don't worry Gingejbee, your time will come.

It will be about 8.30 in the evening.
