Flea And Worm Treatment For Kitten
8 Answers
Vet used Advantage at kitten's first injection at three months old, which worked fine and got rid of fleas. He sold me Broadline at her second injection, I didnt use it for a few weeks as fur baby hasnt been in garden, but had some mad licking moments last week so I used it. She was still scratching a lot around her neck later that day, and today I Found an enormous flea by using the flea comb (which just hopped back on before I could kill it).... She had been in the garage, possibly some fleas in there... I am really annoyed that this Broadline isnt working, so do I have to wait another month before I use something else? I will probably be told by Abers to ask the vet but my main question is....Does anyone recommend Stronghold or Frontline, or Advantage? I really want something for worms as well, and I want to buy it online rather than at vet, can I buy a separate spot on wormer? Fur baby is five months old.

Roundworm.. Heartworm and Otodcetes.. what ever that is..lol.. reading the packet... unfortunately I dunno if you can buy it anywhere other than the vets.. I suspect not... and the prescibed dose depends on the weight of the cat!.. Hope Fur Baby is soon free from scratching! Mrs C x
I'm surprised that your vet isn't offering a 'prescription only' flea treatment (rather than the products which you mention, which are available through pharmacies without a prescription). The stuff I get from the vet comes in a pack marked 'Vetpac prescription cat flea treatment' but the stuff inside is labelled as 'Activyl'. (Because you need a prescription you won't be able to get it online but it definitely works, so it's worth asking about).
For worming, try to get hold of Panacur oral paste. (You can probably find that online). It comes in a plastic syringe, so that you just squirt it onto the back of your cat's tongue, which is a great deal easier than trying to get a tablet into her!

Frontline and broadline both have the same flea killer in it which is fipronil. In parts of the country fleas are now resistant to it. Fipronil doesn't kill fleas immediately they hop on to the animal anyway, you need to treat the environment as well. Is there a reason that you think that your garage would have fleas in it? Did you have pets before your current kitten?
Yes my last cat had Frontline monthly with no problems, it got rid of all the fleas as far as I know.. She died in September. Even if there were fleas left over in the house (yuk) would any treatment given to the new kitten, kill any fleas on her? Broadline didnt seem strong enough to me, do I have to wait another month before a different treatment? Just thought, as my last cat went in the garden and caught any fleas out there, perhaps they lurk in the garage on garden brooms etc..... Kitten explores the garage but cant go out yet as not neutered. By the way Chris, Medic Animal sell Advantage online.
Fleas have this amazing ability to hatch from the pupa when they sense vibration and heat. the fleas that your kitten has picked up might well be from left in the garage from your old cat. Fleas in the house would probably have hatched by now as human body heat and the vibration of human steps will have the same hatching effect. Get some environmental spray treatment and treat the garage thoroughly, also your car if you keep it in the garage. I have a nasty feeling that you will have to wait for some time before treating the kitten again, the best person to ask would be the vet. The fact that kitty still got a flea even though she had been Broadlined means nothing, as I said, fipronil doesn't kill fleas immediately. One thing you can do to remove fleas that is safe is to bath the cat....yes I know am I crazy or what but even done with a non medicated shampoo, it will get the fleas off her and the wet soapy water will stop them getting back on again. this works with people too. The fleas float off and you can see them in the water.
