Crazy having to resort to the internet to find out how to do my job, but here goes!

I'm having to ship a laptop back to the USA and FedEx say I need to fill out an FCC form (something to do with items that can cause RF interference)

I've filled out most of it apart from the Harmonized Tariff number. Anyone know what the code would be for a laptop.

Also FCC ID number - I'm a bit stuck with that one as well.

Just post it by Royal mail international signed for, you just have to fill in a form saying what it is 'laptop computer' and the value. A laptop without batteries ( you can not send the battery by air mail) can not cause RF interference as it has no power.
^^ or just take the battery out and send via FedEx as it will not be able to cause interference then. Lithium batteries (as in lap tops) can not be shipped by air they have to go via surface mail.

Thanks Eddie, but had to via FedEx as we're shipping it for a contractor who has an account with them.

Seems its as US requirement and the contractor didn't know about the form. Have spent half the morning on google and filled it out as best I can!
There seems to be a bit of confusion over lap tops. You can carry one on to an aircraft as hand baggage but you can't send the same lap top as air mail on the same plane, as mail it has to go on a cargo flight due to the Lithium battery being classed as 'hazardous'.
FCC Import Rules:

However there might be little point in reading through all that lot. If FedEx say that they won't carry it without a Form 740 then (irrespective of what the FCC rules actually say) you obviously need one:
