Am I right in thinking that if you buy something second hand then any warranty that the original buyer had isn't transferred to you?

It depends on the terms of the warranty. Some are transferable.

It's nothing in particular, hc. I'm a member of a local selling group on Facebook and notice that people tend to advertise items as still being under warranty.

I thought that the original contract of sale was between the retailer and the person they sold the item to, not any consequent owners.
A warranty is usually supplied by the manufacturer, not the retailer.

Thank you both for your answers.

I've actually got an old teapot from a company that gave out lifetime warranties. I got it in a charity shop for a fiver, they are about £100 quid new. Apparently if you send it to them the will refurbish them free...
