Easyjet Flight Cancellation

My girlfriend was due to go home to Italy today using Easyjet.
She got an email last night saying that her flight is cancelled. She has been offered a new flight (not of which are available before her return flight of 27th December) or a refund.

We have had to take the refund. Is there any chance of getting any compensation? We looked at the terms and conditions of carriage with Easyjet and it says that if the flight was cancelled due to weather then you are not entitled to compensation but if the flight was cancelled due to non exceptional circumstances the you can get compensation upto 250 Euro.

Looking at the Gatwick website all flights seem to be arriving and departing ok and the destination airport Linate Italy the flights seem to be arriving and departing. So to me I would say that the weather is not the reason for the cancellation.

She does have travel insurance. Can she still claim something even though Easyjet have offered a refund?

She is gutted by the way that she is not going to see her family at Christmas!!

i would imagine that flights that have had to be cancelled owing to poor weather ove rhte last few days are now taking precedence, meaning that your g/f's flight has been cancelled. This is still owing to "weather" even though the weather isn't causing flights not to take off today. You wont be entitled to compensation, in my opinion

In addition. We were given the option of transferring to another flight. The next available flight using this choice is Sunday 27th. But I just checked this morning and I can book for today 24th if I make a separate booking. Why was this option not available in the transfer screen? I guess because they can charge more for the separate booking.

Thanks Bednobs. I thought this would be the case but just wanted to check. We have sent an email asking Easyjet if we can get compensation but I actually agree with you. No harm in asking though.
don't take my word for it, i am only giving you my opinion
I have just returned from Newcastle Airport, our flight to Faro is cancelled and we could get one till the 29th, I have had no email from them and was treated like something on their shoe!!
We were told an automatic refund would go back on the card it was paid on, I have lost a holiday and the reason?
there wasn't a crew to run the plane !!!
