Rather than clicking on a link from a pop-up, an excellent program that you might want to consider is the free Driver Booster. I've used it for the last couple of years and it's very good.
I get warnings from something running in the background related to my graphics board, that I suppose I should prevent running, that tells me that, that has updated the driver, and I tend to trust that. But more generally I tend to be suspicious of unexpected warnings and would run scans to ensure that the PC wasn't infected.
There's lots of things that methyl wouldn't touch with a bargepole, it seems!
I started to use it when it was "highly recommended" by Computeractive magazine and find the free version of several of their software products to be excellent. They were downloaded from a Computeractive link and contain no adware.
