garage saying i need ecu unit !!

jusy had egr valve fitted 4 my astra 16 8v 1999 still jerky and using alot of petrol and 02 sensor reading 0 but is working strange i no , garage now saying i need ecu unit. would this help or if i did not get it done would it damage car even more ?? grrrrrrr
