However, only Royal Mail have an obligation to deliver to every address in the UK, so the other companies have what is called downstream access. This basically means that they approach a company, say they can deliver cheaper, do some of the initial sorting, MAYBE deliver it in certain places, but generally put it into the Royal Mail system and let them do it. It's a bit similar to the phones, where these other companies "lease" the lines from BT, who are obliged to do so.
A totally stupid system in my view, as the end result is that Royal Mail investment and earnings are down, the workload is increased, and more jobs are being lost as a result. Postmen may be a thing of the past sooner rather than later. Competition yeah, but if we are gonna have it, let's have it on a level playing field, where they have the same obligations and responsibilities imposed.
Sorry to disagree with so many of you, but now Good Friday has arrived, I can assure you that there is (was) a normal mail delivery today. My wife and I received 6 items between us. They were delivered around 9:30 this morning.
jno. I have never met our current postman so I don't know if he is called Pat or not, but he turned up in the usual red van (no sign of any black and white cat though).
