I'd certainly go for Family Tree Maker - it must be the market leader, and gives nice presentations.
I use it with Ancestry.com, which passes data to it - don't know if it works the other way should you buy Ancestry at some stage.
I've got back to the late 1600s, and therough Ancestry, I've linked into someone researching my family name, and have over 24,000 people in my tree.
I've also been treated to a free DNA test, and found ancestors and close matches in Scandinavia.
