I don't know how much of a big deal the turkey pardoning ceremony is to Americans, but as the president was in a smart suit, perhaps the girls should also have worn more formal clothes.

I think it was a bit nasty of the communications director to criticise them directly. They might just have been badly advised. Perhaps their mum wasn't around to help. She doesn't usually get things wrong clothes-wise.
