However it makes one wonder, how did he manage to become the Lord Mayor when he represents a ward in Leicester which has a population in which the majority are non-white?

/// Councillor Thomas was elected to Leicester City Council in 1995 and currently represents Belgrave ward, a largely ethnic Indian district in a city where more than half of the population is non-white. ///

So Mayor Thomas just took it upon himself to assume that segregation was to take place? Somebody must have told him and if the ridiculous practice was not widespread in Islamic culture the issue would not have arisen whether it was a "misunderstanding" or not.
I am heartily sick of being told about Daily Mail headlines & then finding more suggestions that tell me that it isn't actually true. These I am told are the headlines in the D/ M

Lord Mayor walks out of Islamic charity lunch after his lady consort was told she had to sit downstairs.

Now either that is the truth or it is a lie. If it is the truth then fair enough, & the Mayor did the right thing. Or it is a lie & newspapers who publish false facts should in my humble opinion be closed down for spreading anti racial lies.

hc, yes In know you did, peeps seemed to have ignored them though!
Should have just had his lunch and shrugged off any misunderstanding or lack of information beforehand.
whiskeryron, there is more to a newspaper report than the headline.

If you read it (as I've already posted here more than once) at the bottom of the report the organisers said that the mayor and his consort could have been seated together. Newspapers are notorious for printing controversial headlines that have scant regard to the body of the report.

As it happens, the mayor has been contacted by several agencies and has refused to comment. This happened a week ago.

White's Gentlemen's Club in London has been going strong since 1693 and still doesn't admit women. There's plenty more in the UK. Is that okay in your opinion, fender?
Gromit, why should any woman want to attend a Masonic meeting? To hoover the checked carpet, dust the skull or drive her tipsy husband home?
"White's Gentlemen's Club in London has been going strong since 1693 and still doesn't admit women. There's plenty more in the UK. Is that okay in your opinion, fender?"

If you must make such an inappropriate comparison you should note that whilst women are excluded from places such as White's Club (as permitted under Equality legislation) it does not cause women generally any great harm (in fact, as with membership of the Freemasons, many women may consider it a positive advantage not to be permitted membership).

By contrast, women living in traditional Muslim communities are very much second class citizens. They are expected to be subservient to their husbands; their association with men is tightly controlled; the way they are allowed dress is under a strict code; their inheritance rights are curtailed because of their gender; female offspring are less valued than males; education for girls is seen as unnecessary; in some strict Muslim countries they are not allowed to drive; under Muslim law men are allowed up to four wives (women are allowed just the one husband). To give you a flavour of the philosophy and beliefs that lead to this treatment, here's a few ideas from the Hadith (the teachings of Mohammed):

Bukhari (6:301) - "[Muhammad] said, 'Is not the evidence of two women equal to the witness of one man?' They replied in the affirmative. He said, 'This is the deficiency in her intelligence.'"

Bukhari (6:301) - continued - "[Muhammad said] 'Isn't it true that a woman can neither pray nor fast during her menses?' The women replied in the affirmative. He said, 'This is the deficiency in her religion.'" Allah has made women deficient in the practice of their religion as well, by giving them menstrual cycles.

Bukhari (2:29) - Women comprise the majority of Hell's occupants. This is important because the only women in heaven ever mentioned by Muhammad are the virgins who serve the sexual desires of men. (A weak Hadith, Kanz al-`ummal, 22:10, even suggests that 99% of women go to Hell).

Do you really seek to compare treatment such as this with not being allowed membership of White's club? Your comparison is specious. In fact it's more than that it's just plain silly. You might as well ask why men are not allowed to join the Women's Institute.

/// Baldric, I posted those paragraphs twice. ///

Maybe but what you did fail to address was the fact that she would have been the only female allowed to join the men, as there was a separate area for the women.

Oh and how some on here would love that to happen.

Incidentally this is all about a certain religion not race.

Has it not accrued to you that some tend to alter their tune when confronted about their policies.

Not everyone sticks to the true English ways, many speak with a forked tongue.
