After paying up our mortgage, we are keeping the Deeds to our house with the Building Society for safe keeping. Having said that, I've always wondered what information the Deeds contain & what they look like. Can anyone enlighten me please?

Smudge what you may like to do is ask your Building Society for a photocopy, that way as well as knowing what they look like, you would have a reference when you do need to withdraw them so you are sure that they are conmlete and the right stuff. BTW have you asked therm what they would do if they lost them, or if their store was destroyed. Unless they can give you satifactory answers, that "safekeeping" may be no safer than you having them yourselves
sorry about the typos...eating lunch at the same time!!

Thanx woofgang, that's a jolly good idea! I shall e-mail the B/S now & ask them both questions. Enjoy your lunch, cheers!
you're welcome, lunch was lovely, cold roast beef sarnie
Smudge, Your best bet is to lodge them with your solicitor for safe keeping.....they have provision for looking after legal documents like this...other than that you might invest in fire proof safe for your house (Makro do one at the 80 mark) and you'll know exactly where they are then.

Thanx sft42, I haven't rec'd a reply from our B/S yet, but keeping them at home is another option. We have thought about buying a fireproof safe, big enough for our treasured photo's & video's, as well as personal doc's. Cheers! P.S. Glad you enjoyed your lunch woofgang!
Just as an aside - apparently the best way of safeguarding your deeds is to keep a small amount outstanding on your mortgage and the B/S will look after them for you free. Even if you have already paid off the balance, have a word with them and they may permit you to do this. It's a common practice apparently.

Thanx BenDToy, we did know the B/S would look after the Deeds if you kept say a £1 outstanding on your mortgage, but we just wanted to actually see what they look like & what info they contain. Cheers.
I remember seeing the deeds to a neighbours Georgian house years ago and it was all in copperplate writing. It gave details of room usage and servants quarters. I can't remember much else - it was a long time ago! Get hold of them and have a read!

Thanx pandoradeus, that sounds exactly what we're looking for, can't wait now! Cheers!

Question Author
pandoradeus, we haven't heard from the Building Society yet, but will let you know the contents when we do. Cheers.
