That's why Boston's 'more than a feeling' does it for me. The gentle guitar at the beginning contrasts with the soaring rockier bits / guitar solo/s. The sentiment of the song is quite personal, which always helps and it's my favorite genre, which will always have a big influence on one's choice.

They are - a masterpiece of word play.
I just love everything about this song - the delicate guitar that Neil Hannon plays, he gorgeous crooning voice and perfect diction, and the little violin figure that plays behind him, but you only notice it when the vocal stops and you can hear it on its own.
I first heard this when NH played in live on Jonathan Ross's show on Radio Two years ago, and I was captivated then by just him and a guitar. When I heard the full arrangement, it became a song to give me pleasure like few others, and I play it regularly, and wish I could write something a tenth as good as that.
