Your licence is revoked. There is no right of appeal against the revokation, only against the offence(s) which incurred the points. You have to apply for a new provisional licence, and you are treated as if you had never held a full licence at all. This means a complete re-test (including theory test, etc.) for any or all of the classes of vehicle you wish to drive.
Newly qualified drivers, especially young ones, are more at risk in the first year or so after passing their test, than at any other time in their motoring career and one in five will have an accident in the first year alone. This law aims to reduce the number of road deaths and injuries by penalising new drivers who increase their risks by committing offences.
