As has been said before, the carte-not-quite-blanche construction gave a fairly easy way in -- and it would have been too straightforward if there had not been the 12ed answers. I guessed the saying from the preamble quite quickly, but got held up a bit in the top left-hand corner. I was a bit underwhelmed by the final step, but apart from that thank you, Artix.

Fortunately, (1) I *am* of a certain age and (2) I've read a lot of Jane Austen and watched a lot of Doctor Who and Downton Abbey. The topic was briefly mentioned in the very first Doctor Who episode!

This became much easier once I discovered QXW - I made a complete mess of 90 degree symmetry in my original scribbled grid. I found this much tougher than other people seem to have done! Thanks Artix. Cleverly constructed, I thought.

Not really sure about the relevance of the 13-letter word. But, meh, who cares?

Not an elegant puzzle by any means. Contrived in places and divorcing the younger generation. Can't say I've got a lot good to say about this Artix. Bring back Radix. Meursault.

A bit pretentious to say that this puzzle divorced the younger generation... I'm one of them, and I loved it.

Only completed this yesterday after a week off-grid, as it were. I enjoyed it once I had found the logical place to start the fill, and I think the cleverness of many of the clues has been overlooked by some contributors. For example, both 5 and 19 brought a smile after ages working out what was going on; and 3 was a model of attention-diverting economy.

Without giving anything away, Scorpius, if you're still checking in: in 1, take what I assume are the problem letters of your answer and look them up in BRB; in 22, compare your answer with the words in the clue; in 29, your word can be verified in Bradford (although not the other way round).
