help me!!

When I was about 8 (1996) I watched a film and it has been bugging me what it was called... can anyone help me? All I can remember is a father beating his too sons, wife and dog. eventually he kills the dog and the brothers decide to build an aeroplane to escpae. it basically ends with one of the boys going off in the plane to freedom leaving his brother behind! I don't remember any of the actors and its driving me mad, please help!!!!
