Sorry, I forgot to add to the last post that if ever you have a maths question, as a first point of call you can type the maths question into google's search bar and it will spit out the answer (if you typed the question correctly). Here I just typed "0.75% of £135000" and it gives you the answer very quickly.

I actually didn't work it out in my head first, but I suppose I did have the advantage of being able to stare at the answer and realising that it was about what I expected, which was "about a thousand".

It's three quarters of 1%.

1% is £1,350. Three quarters of that is half plus a half (of the half). Half is £675. Half of that is £337.50. Add the two together and it comes to £1,012.50.

You can adapt this calculation method for most common fractions. Two-thirds is three-sixths (a half) plus one sixth. So it's half plus a third. Five-eights is four eights (a half) plus one eighth so it's half plus a quarter. Four sevenths is three and a half sevenths (a half) plus a half of a seventh, so it's half plus a seventh. The list is endless. Simples !!!

You aren't the only one... NJ, I think you've either got that wrong or you were missing out the "so it's a half + a third [of a half]", etc.

No, I'm not having a laugh and I haven't got it wrong. I did not include the "...of the half" etc. because I thought having established the principle it was a given that the second calculation was made on the result of the previous one. So I apologise for any confusion in that respect, but the rest is correct.

So:

3/4 is 1/2 plus a 1/2.
5/8 is 1/2 plus a 1/4.
3/8 is 1/4 plus a 1/2.
4/9 is 1/3 plus 1/3.
7/12 is 1/2 plus 1/6.
8/13 is 2/3 minus 1/13 (derived from 26/39 minus 2/39 - which is 1/13 of 26/39).

This principle is widely used by "settlers" when calculating returns from winning bets. £10 @ 11/8 is Stake plus Evens plus 1/4 plus 1/2:

£10 + £10 + £2.50 + £1.25 = £23.75

£10 @ 4/9 is Stake plus 1/3 plus 1/3:

£10 +£3.33 + £1.11 = £14.44

You have to have decent mental arithmetic but a competent settler can calculate these returns far more quickly that can somebody with a specialised calculator.
