foxes digging holes

Can anyone suggest anyway that I can stop the foxes digging up my garden. No matter how many times I fill the holes with stones and put amonia down they dig it up again. I also make sure there is no food left out to attract them.

Not easy. There are two types of digging so far as I can tell. Foxes can dig fairly large trenches which you certainly need to discourage. By and large a combination of pea sticks and link-stakes has successfully protected the plants in our garden.
Foxes also dig lots of very small holes. This is how they cache (hide) food, for later retrieval. Generally these are quite hard to spot (unless you have a perfect lawn), as they take great care to repair the ground with their nose. If you find an egg-shell buried in your lawn (or in a plant pot) you can be certain that a fox has been visiting.

If they have taken a particular liking to your garden for some reason it's difficult to discourage them. Your garden may be close to their lair which may be why they're digging holes close by to cache their food. I love to see them but also being a keen gardener understand how annoying it must be. I've been hold that human urine can discourage them but if you adopt this route you may prefer to use a bucket and creep out with it after dark otherwise your neighbours might start thinking you need a visit from DynaRod !

A possible deterant that may be worth experimenting with, which apparently works in getting rid of moles from a lawn is putting a sprig of gorse in the hole and then back filling.

After a few encounters with the spiney twigs, they may think twice about comming back. Good Luck.

Apparently foxes don't like the smell of human hair so maybe have a word with your local hairdresser and get them to back up the cuttings for you. Hang some filled sacks around the perimeter of your garden and if it works it has cost you nothing. A neighbour keeps chickens and it seems to have worked for him.

A farmer once told me that the smell of human urine discourages foxes. I don't know whether this is true or not. Try peeing in your garden. (S'true, really)
