I cleaned up immediately, obviously, but there is still a stain that I have tried unsuccessfully to remove. Can anyone help? It is a wool carpet.

Well lanolin comes from sheeps wool so should not hurt carpet to badly. Have you tried a strong detergent or oxyclean
You could try Fullers Earth ....cat litter really.
It is very good indeed at absorbing oily stuff.
Don't rub it in, just shake some on to cover the stain, then leave it for a few hours then take it up with a dustpan and brush.
At worst it won't do any harm.
